Carbon Fiber Hood – The Light Choice
We often look for value in products if they are heavy. If some one gifts us a gold necklace we know its value from its weight. If we are looking to evaluate how tough and durable a product is we tend to favor heavy products. We look upon weight as an easy to measure and easy to trust attribute. After all many things are sold by weight and if you are getting something heavy you are likely to be getting good value for your money.
Of course with the advent of modern technology strength and durability are no longer linked to the weight. Modern materials can be light and strong. And in fact being heavy can be a disadvantage. For example an aircraft has to be light and yet very safe. Being heavy is a huge disadvantage for an aircraft. Even in your car there are advantages and disadvantages of being heavy.
If the car is very light it will not be stable at high speeds and even a small perturbation could potentially throw it off a safe trajectory. On the other hand a very heavy car will have a poor power to weight ratio and it will give a sluggish performance. Therefore a car has to strike the right balance. And there are products such as a car spoiler that improve the aerodynamics of the car and make it more stable at high speeds.
What one can do is selectively reduce the weight of the car so that you get benefits but do not compromise other aspects of the car’s performance. A carbon fiber hood does just that. It makes the car lighter by replacing the metal hood. Also carbon fiber hoods can have exquisite designs and look very appealing. The fact that the weight is reduced at the front of the car is also important. That reduces the amount of weight being carried by the front wheel. Since we steer the car with the help of the front wheels lesser weight on the front wheels make the car easier to steer.
